What to do When Life Gives you an "Unplanned" Moment
For those of us who are on a Spiritual Journey we may call this a “Tower Moment”. A moment divinely set in our path by the Universe which will teach us the lessons needed to continue our expansion.
For those who are not... this can definitely be called an inconvenience, bad luck, or “why me!?” moment but do not lose hope! You can overcome and expand from any challenges.
Let's be real! Who cannot relate to these moments in life? Let’s take the Covid Pandemic For example. Were you prepared? No one was! I personally thought this was going to be one of those situations where social media and the news would just hype it up for a while and it would be gone in no time. However, we know… that wasn’t the case.
So, what can you do when an unexpected event(s) impacts you?
The number one thing you should always do is breath! Yes, breath. It sounds so simple but breathing has a set of scientific components that will allow your nervous system to calm down and think clearly.
Remember that all actions or inactions have a domino effect. So here is your action plan.
Doing what is necessary to calm down your nervous system will allow you to center yourself, ground yourself and give your mind the necessary space to think “clearly”.
Thinking clearer will allow your subconscious mind to come up with ideas. Ideas that under the stressors of the activation of the fight or flight mechanism would otherwise not show up.
Ok, so how can this be done?
Meditation! Yes, Meditation is what will allow everything to come into play for you and be able to come into alignment, calm your nervous system down and allow ideas to flow.
You do not have to be an expert! Meditation is just about being intentional. Be intentional on what the goal is.
What are you trying to accomplish by meditating?
Ask a higher source. Whether you believe in God, The Divine, The Universe, Angels, Spirits, loved ones who have passed on for the answers you are seeking for. Ask for the guidance, for clarity during this unplanned moment in your life.
Plan a designated time and space (you can start small; 5- 10 minutes is better than none)
Be intentional - Believe
Keep a Journal next to you to write down anything that came up for you after your meditation
You can choose to listen to a guided meditation or meditation music but not necessary
Sitting up or laying down with your back straight
Close your eyes
Take a deep breath in counting to 5 in your mind and feel your diaphragm expand; exhale counting to 5
Continue to breath in and out and pay attention to your breathing
Try to focus on your breathing without letting your mind wonder. If it does wonder, no worries just get back into focus
Make it a daily ritual
Why Does Meditation Work?
Ok, so when S*it happens that you were not planning on you get can sad, angry, overwhelmed, stressed, and even sick!
We are slaves to 2000 years of human evolution and the amygdala is the part of the brain that controls your “fight or flight” response mechanism. This is what we used to survive however this mechanism continues to serve its purpose although we no longer needed to outrun a silver tooth tiger!
According to a recent study from Sara Lazar Ph.D. from Harvard University, “The study found a decrease in Gray matter in the Amygdala and what was interesting was that the change in Gray matter was correlated with the change in stress, so the more stress reduction people reported the smaller the amygdala became”.
What does this tell us? Meditation can be used to train the Amygdala not to react. This will allow space between the “knee Jerk” reaction which will in turn stop the levels of cortisol from spiking and being on a constant “fight or flight” response which will allow for reduced stress and the ability to think before reacting.
If you make meditation a ritual, meaning, you do it over and over again, you will create what scientist call “neuroplasticity”.
What is Neuroplasticity? It is the ability of the brain to form and reorganize synaptic connections, especially in response to learning or experience or following injury.
Meditation will help you create new neuro pathways which have been proven to help reduce stress, anxiety, think clearer, be more compassionate, happier, have higher levels of focus, and the list goes on and on.
This is definite way to deal with any “unplanned”, “tower moment” in life.
I invite you to give meditation a try if you don’t already do so, and if you do, congratulations!
